Technical search practice

Make the crawl reflect the website.

Site maintainers need consistent technical signals and a clear understanding of the pages they want discovered.

A page can return successfully while instructing a crawler not to index it, pointing its canonical elsewhere or appearing in a sitemap under a different URL. Technical Search Bulletin examines these relationships between a page and the signals used to discover and interpret it. The publication focuses on observable output and configuration, keeping the distinction between technical eligibility and a search engine’s eventual decision about crawling, indexing or presenting a result.

Inspect the response as a connected set of signals

Check the final status after redirects, the HTML robots directive and any robots instruction in the HTTP headers. Review the canonical URL against the intended public version of the page. A template preview is not a substitute for the response served by the live domain, where caching or server rules may add different headers. Keep the exact tested URL and relevant output with the investigation. This makes it possible to distinguish a content problem from a route, host or deployment configuration issue.

Keep the sitemap aligned with the index policy

An XML sitemap should list the canonical public URLs intended for indexing, rather than every record stored in a content system. Review exclusions for private, protected or explicitly noindex material. Check how a static homepage and a separate posts page are represented, especially when changing SEO plugins. A valid XML document can still contain an unintended URL. Follow the generated entries to the actual pages and confirm that redirects or conflicting directives have not made the sitemap inconsistent with the site’s current policy.

Use live evidence when diagnosing visibility

Inspect an affected page and its sitemap on the deployed site, then use the search engine’s own diagnostic facilities where access is available. A crawler user-agent test helps identify one kind of application behaviour but does not reproduce the crawler’s source network or every hosting rule. This bulletin explores directives, canonicals and sitemaps through practical publishing cases. Its guidance supports clear technical output; it does not promise indexing, rankings, a particular search snippet or inclusion in a third-party backlink database.
